Bath MP calls for more investment in heat networks after London visit
Heat networks deemed crucial for affordable and sustainable heating
Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, Wera Hobhouse, has urged the Government to prioritise investment in heat networks following her visit to the Greenwich Peninsula Energy Centre in London.
The visit aimed to explore how heat networks could provide extensive and environmentally friendly heating solutions for thousands of homes and businesses while contributing to carbon emission reductions.
Currently accommodating approximately 2,300 homes, the Greenwich Peninsula network has plans to eventually serve 17,500 homes. Additionally, it supplies heat to local businesses, a school, restaurants, and outlets around the O2 Arena.
During the site visit, Mrs Hobhouse observed various components of the heat network's infrastructure, which includes the Energy Centre, air source heat pumps, and a residential property connected to the system. The installation of a 5MW air source heat pump is underway, anticipated to cut carbon emissions by approximately 6,100 tonnes annually.
The visit facilitated discussions on existing barriers that hinder new heat network developments, such as high upfront investment costs and complex planning processes. Representatives from Hemiko emphasised the need for government incentives and greater certainty regarding future consumers to encourage investment in heat networks.
Wera Hobhouse said: “It’s clear this is the way we must be moving. Heat networks are a critical part of the journey to affordable, low-carbon and reliable heat. Greenwich Peninsula is a great example of what can be achieved. The technology is here, but we need to make it easier to invest in and expand heat networks across the country. The Government should be looking at how it can remove the barriers holding back investment and give businesses the confidence they need to deliver more projects like this.”
