Major work to transform the A4 Portway in Bristol begins
Significant improvements aim to enhance transport experiences along a key Bristol route
Major work on the A4 Portway in Bristol officially launches today, signaling the start of efforts to improve bus journeys and create a better environment for walking, wheeling, and cycling.
The third and main phase of the project commences today, 9th March 2026, and is scheduled to continue for approximately 14 months.
This phase will see the addition of 24-hour bus lanes, reduced speed limits, improved junctions, increased green spaces with tree planting, new street lighting, and road resurfacing.
Councillor Ed Plowden, Chair of the Transport and Connectivity Committee, said, “Transforming the A4 Portway is a key part of our long-term vision for this major transport corridor that can support Bristol’s future growth."
He further noted, “These improvements will help people move around more easily by making bus journeys quicker and more reliable, thanks to 24‑hour bus lanes and upgraded junctions, while also creating safer and more attractive spaces for walking, wheeling and cycling."
The work will be conducted in stages across the six-mile Portway route, culminating with coordinated resurfacing works and the painting of the 24-hour bus lanes toward the project's conclusion.
Phase three activities, starting today between Portway Roundabout and Park Road, will involve traffic and street light replacements, bus stop and drainage improvements, road resurfacing, and new road markings.
While some lane closures are anticipated, the A4 Portway will remain accessible until resurfacing work near the project's end.
Additionally, Roman Way's junction with the Portway will be closed starting at 9:30am today for drainage and kerb works, remaining closed until 7pm on 13th March.
Walking and cycling access on Roman Way will not be affected, and drivers will be directed via a diversion.
Ongoing phase two work will wrap up over the summer, focusing on completing pavement, kerb, and drainage work.
