Borders building firm fined £120,000 after worker injured in fall

A Borders building firm has been fined £120,000 after a worker suffered serious injuries in a fall through the roof of a farm building.

It follows an incident at Kelloe Mains in Duns, on July 16th, 2021.

The Thorburn Group pled guilty to a breach of Work at Height Regulations when the case called at Jedburgh Sheriff Court this morning (Thursday).

It heard leg injuries the employee sustained in the 13 foot fall has prevented him from returning to work.

In addition to the fine, the Duns-based firm - which specialises in the design and manufacture of bespoke steel frame buildings - was ordered to pay a £9,000 company surcharge.

Officers swooped on Unit One Mansfield Gardens on June the 12th last year.

Ryan Kennan pled guilty to a charge of being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug when he appeared at Jedburgh Sheriff Court this morning.

Sheriff Peter Paterson noted he already had a previous conviction for a similar offence.

Sentence has been deferred on the 34-year-old until next month for background reports.
