A number of homes and businesses across our region remain without electricity this morning (Wednesday) after gale force winds brought down power lines and blocked roads overnight.

Hawick appears to have been one of the hardest hit towns by Storm Bram, with a flying wheelie bin blamed for damaging at least one car there.

And the swimming pool at the Teviotdale Leisure Centre is closed due to a technical issue blamed on the adverse weather, although the gym, soft play and cafe remain open.

Part of Peebles town centre has also been sealed off amid concerns over falling slates.

The Central Bar, which is one of the properties in the Northgate, said "a few windows from the flats above the pub have suffered".

A spokesperson added: "A big thank you to the Fire Brigade and Police for their presence down the Northgate to keep the street safe. We will continue to communicate with the flat owners affected to ensure the area remains safe."

Borders Buses has confirmed only stops on Edinburgh Road will be served until further notice.

The A7 between Fountainhall and Stow, and back road between Peebles and Cardrona were among the routes blocked for a short time.

Teviotdale, Tweeddale, and the Leader Valley are among the areas affected by widespread power cuts.

SP Energy Networks say engineers are working to restore supplies, with most properties expected to be reconnected by 6pm today.

Meanwhile, in Northumberland, the Lilidorei at The Alnwick Garden was among the local attractions forced to close amid strengthening winds.

But Met Office yellow - be prepared - weather warnings for wind and rain, covering much of our region, have now been lifted.
