Police issue seven speed warnings at Borders beauty spot in one day
Last updated 14th May 2025
Police have revealed they've issued seven warnings for speeding on roads around St Mary's Loch in one day.
It comes just weeks after a 50mph limit was introduced on the A708 - between Selkirk and Moffat - as part of a drive to make roads in our region popular with motorcyclists safer.
But none of those warned were riding bikes.
Last month two motorcyclists died following separate crashes on our region's road.
A 26-year-old man suffered fatal injuries after his bike was involved in a collision with a car on the Langshaw road, between Galashiels and Lauder, on April 26th.
And, a 58-year-old man died following a motorcycle crash on the B6357 near Saughtree on April 6th.
The tragedies followed the death of a 70-year-old man, whose bike was involved in a collision with a lorry and a car, on the A68 at Earlston on March 19th.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "On Monday 5th May, Roads Policing and Community Officers carried out patrols at and on the roads round St Mary’s Loch. They focused on engaging with motorcyclists, giving safety advice and ensuring that their bikes were road worthy.
"Speed checks were also carried out with seven warnings given to road users for speeding, none of whom were motorcyclists."
