A man has been charged in connection with sheep-worrying offences in the Scottish Borders.

It comes after one animal was reported dead, and another injured, following a suspected dog attack.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on the outskirts of Peebles on Sunday, September 28th.

Police say a report detailing the circumstances is being sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

It's prompted a reminder from officers that anyone failing to keep their dog under control could face a fine of up to £40,000 or up to 12 months in jail.

A spokesperson said: "It is the dog owner’s responsibility to ensure their dog is under control when livestock is present.

"The damage and distress caused not just to the animals, but the farming business is considerable."

And they added: "Legislation is in place to protect livestock from dog attack and irresponsible dog owners can and will be prosecuted."

Meanwhile, a large number of sheep have been stolen from a farm in the Scottish Borders.

The animals - 30 ewes and four lambs - were taken from a field near the A6112 road, between Preston and Auchencrow, sometime in September.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police, by calling 101 - quoting incident number 1386 of October 8th.
