Police probe 'deliberate' building fire in Jedburgh

An investigation's been launched following a fire in Jedburgh, which resulted in emergency teams being called out.

Police say they believe the blaze at a building near Sharplaw Road was started deliberately.

The alarm was raised around 8.40pm on Tuesday (September 23rd).

Officers say it's being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Detective Constable Joe Carmichael, from Police Scotland, said: “I’m appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious, or has any information about what happened, to contact us.

“I’d also like to ask drivers with dash-cams who were travelling on Sharplaw Road on Tuesday evening to please review their footage, as they may have captured something which would assist our investigation.”

The picture attached is from a fire which Berwick Retained and Blues attended in Spittal on Friday and shows how strong the reflecting light can be.

Meanwhile, fire crews in Berwick are advising the public to keep magnifying mirrors out of direct sunlight, and remove glass ornaments or paperweights from window sills.

The warning comes after crews attended two house fires in the past week, both of which have been blamed on sunlight reflecting off mirrors and setting fire to objects in the room.
