A Borders swimming pool is to remain closed this weekend while repairs are carried out following reports of a chemical leak.

Selkirk Leisure Centre had to be evacuated after an alarm was triggered shortly before 6pm last night (Thursday).

The Scottish Ambulance Service said it had sent four ambulances and its special operations team to the incident.

"All members of the public were checked over at the scene and no-one was transported to hospital," it added.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was at the scene on Buccleuch Road for about three hours dealing with the incident.

"Four fire appliances and a specialist decontamination unit were mobilised to the scene, where the building had been fully evacuated," said a statement.

"Firefighters worked to stem a chlorine leak, prevent any further spread and ensure the area was safe.

"There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene just after 9pm."

The pool has been earmarked for closure as part of a cost-cutting review, although no decision has been made while a public consultation is carried out.

A spokesperson for operators Live Borders said: "Alarms were triggered yesterday evening due to a chemical leak from a pipe at Selkirk Leisure Centre.

"All safety protocols were followed and emergency services responded.

"We have been advised by the engineers that Selkirk Leisure Centre will remain closed for the weekend as repairs are made.

"We apologise for any inconvenience, and will keep you updated."

Fire crews are pictured responding to a small blaze on Tweedbank industrial estate at the weekend.

Meanwhile, with an extreme risk of wild fires in place across Scotland, steam train services at a Northumberland tourist attraction have been put on hold "for the foreseeable future".

A statement from Heatherslaw Light Railway said: "Due to the ongoing hot weather and lack of rainfall, we’re temporarily giving our steam locomotives a well-earned rest to protect her and our beautiful surroundings from any fire risk.

"For the foreseeable future, Binky, our trusty diesel locomotive, will be heading up our daily services."
