A 46-year-old man who left another man scarred after striking him on the head with a glass at a bar in Hawick has been ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work and given a six-week night-time curfew.

Sean Mitchell Brown previously admitted pushing the man on the body and struggling violently with him before carrying out the attack to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

The offence happened at the Waverley Bar on High Street, Hawick, on December 26th last year.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court heard the first offender was reacting to derogatory comments made to him about his wife.

As part of his punishment, Brown, of Hawick, must stay at home between the hours of 7pm and 7am for the next six weeks.

Sheriff Robert Fife said the sentence is a direct alternative to prison.

Meanwhile, a teenager out celebrating his 19th birthday in Kelso has admitted assaulting a man to his severe injury and danger of life, following a verbal altercation.

Murray Jackson repeatedly punched his victim on the left cheek during the incident outside the Queen's Head bar in June - causing him to fall and strike his head on a kerb, knocking him unconscious.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court heard the man was taken to Borders General Hospital and required three stitches to the back of his head following the incident on June 26th.

Sheriff Robert Fife warned Jackson it was a “very serious charge”, particularly in the context of his victim apologising to him and him appearing to accept it.

Sentence has been deferred until next month for background reports, including a restriction of liberty order assessment. Bail has been continued meantime.
