Scottish Borders Council is flying the Armed Forces Day flag at its headquarters in Newtown St Boswells.

The annual event honours the service and sacrifice of the men and women of the UK's Armed Forces.

The flag was raised during a ceremony by reservists from Galashiels, Lieutenant Corporal Elphick and Sergeant Kelly.

Councillor John Greenwell, the local authority's Armed Forces Champion, said the national day of recognition is a chance to show "respect and admiration" for those who are serving and have served in the Armed Forces.

He also thanked the council for its continued support of the Armed Forces Covenant, saying it is now fully embedded in its policies and decision-making processes.

Councillor Greenwell added that the support shown by communities across the Scottish Borders during Armed Forces Week was "deeply appreciated", recognising the efforts of those who work to maintain the nation's safety and security.

Events are being held across the UK to recognise serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and military families.

The ceremony was also attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale, John Jeffrey, marking his first Armed Forces Day flag raising since taking up the role in 2025.

He said: “It was a privilege to attend my first Armed Forces Day flag raising as Lord-Lieutenant.

“This annual ceremony is a meaningful way to mark the contribution of our Armed Forces community and to reflect on the service, dedication and sacrifice of those who serve, and have served, our country.”
