Hundreds of children in the Scottish Borders swapped the classroom for the countryside today (Tuesday) - to learn more about farming.

The Border Union Agricultural Society's annual Schools Countryside Day has been held at Springwood Park in Kelso since 2013.

As well as demonstrations of traditional skills such as weaving and sheep-sheering, the Primary 5 pupils were also shown how innovations like drone technology are helping to shape the future.

Jac Neill, Education and Careers Coordinator at the Border Union Agricultural Society, said: “Our Schools Countryside Day is one of the most important events in the Border Union’s calendar.

"It gives children the chance to learn first-hand where their food comes from, meet people who work in rural industries and learn about the importance of farming, the natural environment and local businesses."

The Schools Countryside Day continues to benefit from the long-standing support of the Fallago Environment Fund, which has contributed £109,161 to the initiative since 2016 through a series of grants.

The Fund shares the benefits of the Fallago Wind Farm in the Lammermuir Hills with projects across the Scottish Borders and is financed by Roxburghe Estates, Federated Hermes and EDF power solutions.

Speaking on behalf of the Fund, His Grace, The Duke of Roxburghe, said: “The Border Union Schools Countryside Day is a fantastic initiative that gives children an engaging insight into rural life and the vital role our countryside communities play.

“It also helps to introduce them to the wide range of rewarding careers available across the rural sector. I’m so delighted to see funds generated by the Fallago Rig windfarm being used to support such an important and worthwhile event.”
