Tributes paid to driver who died following collision with lorry on A7

Police have named a motorist who died following a collision with a lorry on the A7 north of Langholm.

Sam Cropper (pictured top), from Newcastleton, was driving a green Toyota Hilux on the cross-border route when it was involved in a crash with the heavy goods vehicle.

Emergency services were called out to the incident, near Briery Bank, around 11.35am on Tuesday, but the 36-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sam's passenger, a 55-year-old man, was taken to hospital where medical staff describe his condition as serious but stable.

The driver of the white Scania escaped uninjured.

Friends and family have taken to social media to pay tribute to Sam, who has been described as "one of the best" - adding, the world won't be the same without him.

A section of the road between Hawick and Carlisle was closed for more than 12 hours while road traffic investigators examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Sergeant Colin Ramage said: “Our thoughts remain with Sam’s family and friends at this difficult time, as well as the man who suffered serious injuries.

"We continue to carry out extensive enquiries into this crash and I’d appeal to anyone with information or dash-cam footage to come forward.”
