Around 40 emergency service personnel were involved in a major rescue operation on the River Tweed near Berwick.

The incident began around 4.35pm on Tuesday after the fire service received reports of a dog in the water and a person attempting to rescue it.

Coastguard teams, the RNLI, police, firefighters and ambulance crews all attended the scene.

Two people were brought safely ashore from the riverbank, while the dog was rescued by Berwick RNLI's lifeboat crew and reunited with its owner.

As the incident unfolded, concerns were raised that a third person may also have entered the water.

That prompted a large-scale multi-agency search involving Berwick and Eyemouth Coastguard rescue teams, Northumbria Police, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, the North East Ambulance Service and both Berwick RNLI lifeboats.

The search was later stood down after officers reviewed CCTV footage and confirmed no additional person had entered the river.

Berwick Coastguard said the incident highlighted the close cooperation between emergency services, with the operation coordinated by one of its Coastguard Rescue Officers to ensure a safe conclusion.

A spokesperson said: "The incident was managed by one of our Coastguard Rescue Officers, who coordinated with partner agencies to bring the operation to a safe and successful conclusion."

It comes as Coastguard Rescue Officers continue to campaign against plans to remove their hourly payments.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency says volunteers would still be able to claim compensation for certain activities under the proposed changes.
