A farmer’s been left without the use of three quad bikes after thieves caused thousands of pounds worth of damage trying to steal them from a secure container over the weekend.

Police are appealing for information following the attempted theft.

It happened at a farm along the A701, in the Tweedsmuir area, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It's the latest in a series of high-value rural thefts in the Peeblesshire area in recent weeks.

A horsebox stolen from a local livery was used to help thieves escape with two cash machines following a ram raid on the Royal Bank of Scotland in Peebles earlier in the week.

A quad bike was also reported stolen from a farm on Leithen Road, just outside of Innerleithen, in the days before.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are appealing for information following the attempted theft of three quad bikes from a farm in the Tweedsmuir area of the Scottish Borders.

“The incident happened between 1am and 7am on Saturday, October 3rd, when the container housing the vehicles was broken into, not far from the A701 near Glenbreck.

“The quad bikes were left with damage amounting to thousands of pounds and the farmer unable to use vehicles that are vital to his work.

“Anyone who saw anything suspicious, including along the A701 in the Tweedsmuir area, is asked to contact us on 101, or make a call anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Meanwhile, police have revealed items stolen from properties in the Scottish Borders were among a large haul recovered by officers in the Polmont area – more than 30 miles away – at the end of last month.

A Transit van, four motorbikes, e-bikes, mountain bikes and tools, have now been returned to their rightful owners.
