Police in the Scottish Borders have revealed 18 vehicles were deemed UNSAFE to be on the region's roads during three separate spot checks in one day last month.

Officers inspected multiple vehicles - including HGVs and tractors - after pulling drivers over on the A697 near Greenlaw and Coldstream, as well as the A6105 near Duns, on December the 8th.

A statement issued by police tonight (Monday) revealed "numerous offences and defects were identified, resulting in 18 vehicles being prohibited from use on our roads, due to being in an unsafe condition."

It comes just months after Transport Scotland revealed there had been an increase in road fatalities in 2024 with 160 people being killed in collisions on Scotland’s roads - which represented a 9% increase from 2023.

The statement from Police Scotland goes on to add: "Our teams will continue to carry out these checks, to and improve road safety and make our communities safer."
