Peebles High Street remains sealed off this lunchtime as police probe the theft of two cash machines from the town’s Royal Bank of Scotland.

Dramatic video footage captured thieves using a telehandler to load the ATMs onto a stolen horse box around 3am this morning (Tuesday).

Three male suspects, all wearing dark clothing, were seen making their escape in an Audi and pick-up, leaving a gaping hole in the front of the town centre building.

A number of cars were damaged in the ram raid. The owner of one told us: "We heard the alarm going off but we never thought anything of it, because the alarm goes off in the bank quite a lot.

"Then my girlfriend saw something on Facebook about it, so I've came out and my car's been shunted forward, (from) where it's been parked."

And he added: "It's a bit worrying because I've not really had my car that long."

Three male suspects, all wearing dark clothing, were seen making their escape in a grey Audi saloon car, and a grey Isuzu D-Max pick-up - which was towing the horse box.

But the telehandler, which is also believed to be stolen, was left at the scene.

The telehandler was abandoned in the town centre by the thieves, who left a trail of destruction.

The incident has caused disruption in the centre of Peebles, with the High Street and roads around Eastgate sealed off.

It comes almost eight months after a similar incident in Coldstream, when a stolen telehandler was used in a smash and grab on the cash machine at the town's Co-op store.

The Co-op in Coldstream was targeted in a similar raid in February.

And it comes just house after a series of farm raids in the area - with quad bikes reportedly stolen from the Innerleithen, Falahill and Humbie areas.

Carol Ramage, who runs The Orange Grove told Greatest Hits Radio: "It's shocking what's happened next door.

"At 7am this morning, one of the residents messaged me to say the street was closed. It's just hard to believe.

"People think it's a wee sleepy town and then this happens. But the community will rally round."

Parked cars were shunted onto the pavement as the telehandler rammed them out the way.

DI Keith Sinclair, Dalkeith CID, said: “This was clearly a planned series of crimes, involving stolen vehicles, to target the cash machines.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace the suspects and officers are working through CCTV from the area and speaking to witnesses.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has come forward with information already and ask anyone else who can help to contact police.

"If you saw what happened, saw the vehicles before or after the theft or have any information on where the Audi, Isuzu pick-up or horsebox may be now, please let us know.

"I’d also ask anyone with private CCTV, doorbell or dash-cam equipment to review their footage and bring anything of significance to our attention.”

If you can help, please call Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 0303 of September 29th. Information can also be given anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
