An overturned lorry is continuing to cause "havoc" with traffic in and around Berwick this afternoon.

A northbound section of the A1 remained closed as efforts were made to recover the vehicle, which is understood to have been carrying chilled meats.

Police were first alerted to the crash on Rotary Way around 10.30pm last night (Sunday).

It has been affecting traffic between the East Ord roundabout and Scremerston, with some motorists reporting scenes of gridlock.

One said: "The town is crawling with traffic." Another added: "Just taken me 30 minutes from Spittal to Berwick."

A third replied: "Stay away if possible, traffic blocked both sides of the town. Nightmare."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Just after 10.30pm last night, we received a report of an overturned lorry on Rotary Way near the A1 at Berwick. No injuries reported and no other vehicles involved.

"The lorry had shed its load and the contents of the lorry has meant delays in recovery of the items and the vehicle.

"The A1 northbound at Scremerston is closed and there are diversions in place."
