A man in his 50s has died after his motorcycle crashed on the A696 just north of Otterburn.

The tragedy unfolded just after 4pm on Sunday.

It was reported that a black and green Kawasaki was travelling on the southbound carriageway when it has left the road and collided with a barrier

Police believe the bike may have travelled to Northumberland from the Scottish Borders area and are keen to hear from anyone who might have seen it at any point during the day.

Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage which could assist their investigation.

Sergeant Andy McNally, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident where a man has lost his life. The thoughts of everyone here at Northumbria Police are with his loved ones.

“Our investigation is underway, and we are now appealing for further witnesses who we have not yet spoken with to come forward."

A section of the road was closed for several hours following the collision. It has since been reopened.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

Sgt McNally added: “It’s believed the Kawasaki motorcycle may have been in travelling alongside three other bikes at other points of the day – which may assist motorists to identify if they came across it.

“We know this is a very busy stretch of road through the Borders area into Northumberland – and there will have likely been many motorists passing in both directions.

“If you were in the area or have any information that might help with our investigation, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Anyone with information, particularly those with CCTV or dashcam footage, should send Northumbria Police a direct message on social media or use live chat and report forms on the Force’s website.
