Police have announced a youth has been charged in connection with a fire at a school in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services rushed to the Primary in Newtown St Boswells after the alarm was raised shortly after 1.30pm yesterday (Saturday).

Four fire appliances from Galashiels, Selkirk and Kelso attended the incident.

Images captured at the scene show the fire appearing to take hold of a fence near the entrance, and lapping the side of the building, while smoke could be seen blowing across the playground.

Crews had to put on breathing apparatus and use hose reel jets to put it out.

The motto on the school sign reads: Ready, Respectful, Safe.

The race is now on to assess and repair the damage ahead of children returning after the summer holidays.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.45pm on Saturday, we received a report of a fire at a premises on Sprouston Road, Newton St Boswells.

“Emergency services attended and there were no reports of any injuries.

“A male youth has been charged in connection and a report will be sent to the relevant authority.”

Local councillors have praised the emergency services for their speedy response.

Selkirkshire councillor Leagh Douglas said: "I know many parents and carers will be understandably concerned. The most important thing is that no one was hurt.

"Thanks to the incredibly quick response from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland Scottish Borders, the fire was brought under control swiftly.

"With the new school term not due to begin until August 19th, there is time for a full assessment of the damage to take place.

"Once that work has been completed, any arrangements that may be needed for the start of the school term or nursery will be communicated directly to families."

The area around the school has been sealed off as police secured the scene.

Fellow councillor Caroline Cochrane described news of the blaze as "devastating".

She said: "Schools are at the heart of our communities, and to see one affected in this way is heartbreaking."
