Community rallies round to save Christmas lights fundraiser after school fire

A village whose primary school was damaged by fire last month has vowed its annual Christmas lights fundraiser will go ahead this weekend after residents and local businesses rallied round to save the event.

Organisers were left searching for alternative facilities after the blaze at Newtown Primary School on July 25th left them without access to the building, where electricity and toilet facilities had been due to support the event.

But within days, volunteers secured generators to provide power, while Border Group Kelso stepped in to provide portable toilets free of charge, ensuring it can go ahead as planned.

The family fun day in Newtown St Boswells on August 9th promises something for everyone, including bouncy castles, an obstacle course, BBQ, and car treasure hunt.

Selkirkshire councillor Leagh Douglas said: “It is a wonderful example of a local business stepping up when a community needed it most.

"I know how important this fundraising event is for our community and how incredibly hard this group of volunteers work."

And she added: "I was delighted by the response from Border Group Kelso. They were eager to help at no cost given all the circumstances."

The event raises money for Newtown Community Christmas Lights and a programme of free festive events for local families.

Shelley Edgar, who leads the Newtown Community Christmas Lights group, said: "Losing access to the school created a real challenge, but the support we've received has been incredible.

"The generosity and commitment shown has enabled the event to go ahead as planned, and we hope the community will come along, enjoy a fantastic day and support our fundraising for this year's Christmas celebrations."

Police have confirmed a "male youth" has been arrested in connection with the fire.

The race is now on to assess and repair the damage ahead of children returning after the summer holidays.
