Teamwork makes the dream work in Newtown St Boswells
Last updated 1st Oct 2025
For years, children at a Borders primary school have taken part in sporting events but often felt out of place without a proper kit to wear.
Now, with the support of their local football club, Newtown Primary can proudly attend competitions looking like a united team.
The Border Amateur League side has donated £500 in cash along with a brand-new team kit for the pupils.
The excitement was clear to see as the youngsters in P6 and P7 tried on the strips for the first time. Smiles filled the playground as they posed for photographs with representatives from the club, proudly showing off their new look.
Adding to the sense of occasion, depute headteacher Mr Graham put his creative digital skills to work, producing a slick unveiling video to showcase the kit in style. Pupils and staff alike were impressed, with many comparing the big reveal to that of a professional club.
With their new blue-and-white striped kit, some couldn’t resist drawing a playful comparison to Argentina’s iconic 1986 World Cup winners — though headteacher Kevin Wilson was quick to remind the children that teamwork, not Diego Maradona-style solo runs, would be the key to success!

Eager to express their gratitude, the children wasted no time in writing heartfelt letters of thanks to Newtown Football Club for their generous donation.
Mr Wilson said: “As a school, we place great importance on building strong links with our local community. We are truly grateful to Newtown Football Club for the kindness and support they have shown. Their donation means so much to our children, who now feel ready and proud to compete.”
This partnership marks another positive step in strengthening ties between the school and the wider community — with pupils, staff, and families already looking forward to putting their new kit to good use in the months ahead.
