Co-op store sealed off following suspected ram raid
Last updated 7th Oct 2025
A wrecked Range Rover sits abandoned on the pavement outside the Co-op in Newtown St Boswells this morning (Tuesday) following a suspected ram raid overnight.
Police have sealed off the area around Station Yard - opposite the auction mart - while forensic officers examine the scene.
It's unclear if anything was taken or when it might re-open.
But it's not the first time the national chain has been hit by thieves in our region, with branches in Kelso and Wooler among those targeted in recent times.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 4.05am on Tuesday, police were called to an alarm activation at a supermarket in Newton St Boswells. On arrival, officers found a Land Rover vehicle had been involved in an attempted theft at the business. Enquiries are continuing."
Patients are being allowed to access the neighbouring GP surgery, according to a post on a community page.
One poster said: "The ATM that the thieves got away with must of been sitting on the floor."
Selkirkshire councillor Leagh Douglas has expressed her concern.
In a post on her Facebook page, she said: "Very disappointing news this morning.
"Overnight, an incident has taken place at the Co-op in Newtown St Boswells, and there has also been fly-tipping reported between the Donkey Sanctuary and Hawkslee road end on the way to Tweed Horizons.
"Let’s hope those responsible are identified quickly — there is absolutely no excuse for this type of behaviour in our community.
"If you saw or know anything that might help, please contact Police Scotland."
