It may not be as traditional as a sponsored walk or bake sale.

But Berwick Young Farmers Club hopes its latest fundraiser will help support the Great North Air Ambulance Service - and save lives.

Its members have given up their weekend to take part in a muck-spreading marathon on the Lilburn Estates, near Wooler.

And chairman David Harvey told Greatest Hits Radio it's not just about enriching the soil.

"It's great having an event like this where we all work together as a team, and also raise money for a great cause," he said.

"The muck does smell, but it's not as bad when you're in the cab!"

It comes as an air ambulance, from north of the border, was called out to a farm near Ancrum yesterday after a woman was injured in an incident involving a cow.

"The air ambulance is our chosen charity because they offer crucial life-saving care in rural areas," David explained.

"With some of our members living on hill farms, sometimes the only way to reach them is by helicopter if there was to be an accident."

And he added: "There have been incidents where some of our fellow Young Farmers Clubs' members have received vital care through the service."

Nine members of Berwick Young Farmers Club began spreading before 9am on Saturday, and aren't expected to finish until later today (Sunday), when - after washing down the machinery - they'll join other young farmers at a post-event barbecue.

David said: "The event is a joint fundraiser for the club. Last year we raised £1,500 for the air ambulance, and we hope to raise even more this year."

The club has also set up a JustGiving page for the air ambulance service - you can find out more, and donate, here.
