It's not what you'd normally expect to find on display in your local supermarket.

But two motorbikes parked next to the checkouts inside Asda in Galashiels over the weekend.

It's part of a campaign to remind drivers to watch out for motorcyclists on the road, following a number of fatal crashes.

Among the incidents involving bikes on our region's roads so far this year, a 58-year-old man died following a motorcycle crash on the B6357 near Saughtree on April 6th.

The tragedy unfolded just hours before the speed limit on the road was reduced from 60 to 50mph as part of an 18-month trial aimed at reducing the number of serious and fatal crashes, although it's unclear if speed was a factor on this occasion.

The previous month, a 70-year-old man died after his bike was involved in a collision with a lorry and a car on the A68 at Earlston.

On April 26th, a 26-year-old man from East Lothian died after his motorcycle was involved in a crash on the Langshaw Road, between Galashiels and Lauder.

Speaking earlier this year, Chief Superintendent Hilary Sloan, head of Road Policing, said: “Motorcyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users. Cornering left hand bends and overtaking are the most common collision types. I’m asking bikers to be aware of these risks, take extra care in these situations and share this information.

“For other drivers, you are more likely to see a motorcyclist on the road from now until autumn so take an extra look for them, especially in rural areas on a weekend.

“Take responsibility and take care of each other on the road.”
