A primary in the Scottish Borders is urging parents to stop smoking "whatever they are smoking" at the school gates.

It's claimed children are having to walk through "clouds of smoke" to get to lessons, and that "some things that are being smoked should not be".

Staff at Langlee Primary School in Galashiels say if it continues they will contact the police.

The warning was issued after pupils returned to school yesterday (Monday).

The statement read: "If you are smoking outside of the school (whatever you are smoking), please do so at an appropriate distance away from the school gates.

"It is not okay for children and families to have to walk through clouds of smoke.

"Also, please remember that some things that are being smoked should not be, so you may want to consider doing it elsewhere, completely away from the school."

And it adds: "If this continues, we will have to contact our school police officer."
