A reminder's being issued to children of the dangers of playing on frozen rivers.

It comes after pictures emerged of youngsters appearing to attempt to walk on frozen parts of the Tweed on Friday afternoon.

The town's Provost, Gavin Horsburgh, warned the Scottish Borders beauty spot has already claimed a number of lives:

"If ever someone was to fall in, it doesn't matter whether it's right at the water's bank or actually on the ice," he told Greatest Hits Radio.

"The ice won't be very thick and the temperature of the water will definitely be below zero.

"And, in these extremely cold temperatures, there is also cold water shock."

The freezing conditions are set to continue over the weekend, with the Met Office issuing two new weather warnings.

Ice is expected to cause a "widespread hazard", particularly overnight on Saturday; and up to 10cm of snow is possible on Sunday.

In recent years, a lifebelt has been installed at the Cobby - a popular beauty spot down stream from Floors Castle - following a campaign by a mother who lost two sons in the Tweed.

Mr Horsburgh said: "The Kelso rivers can be fast-flowing, and have many deep parts and rips that will pull you under.

"They have tragically taken so many lives over the years, and I would urge people to realise the dangers of putting yourself and others at risk."

Kelso racecourse has already taken the decision to abandon Sunday's meeting due to a frozen track.

Many of this weekend's other sporting fixtures - including the Wallaceneuk parkrun - have also been called off due to the cold weather.
