Top dogs lead way to Kelso for ulti-mutt competition

Nearly 4,600 dogs from across the UK, Ireland and Europe are heading to the Borders this weekend as one of Scotland's biggest canine events returns to Kelso.
The Border Union Agricultural Society's Championship Dog Show will welcome exhibitors and spectators to Springwood Park on Saturday and Sunday, with hundreds of competitors vying for the coveted Best in Show title.
Organisers say they're delighted with this year's entry numbers following the success of last year's Golden Anniversary event.
More than 100 breeds will be represented across the two-day show, including almost 1,100 Gundogs, over 500 Terriers and close to 1,000 Working and Pastoral dogs.
Local favourites will also be out in force, with 54 Border Collies competing on Saturday, alongside 132 Border Terriers and 38 Dandie Dinmont Terriers on Sunday.
Judging gets underway from 9am each day, with Working, Pastoral, Utility and Toy breeds taking to the rings on Saturday. Gundogs, Hounds and Terriers will be judged on Sunday before the competition culminates in the Best in Show final at around 5pm.
The event isn't just for seasoned competitors.
Visitors are encouraged to bring along their own dogs, provided they're over four months old and vaccinated, for a £5 fee.
For those inspired to step into the show ring themselves, the Kennel Club's popular "Have a Go" experience is returning to Kelso for a third year.
The initiative gives pedigree dog owners the chance to experience competing in a championship show environment, with the possibility of qualifying for Crufts at Birmingham's NEC.
The training session and competition takes place on Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm. Places are limited to 15 handlers and dogs, with each participant receiving a rosette and goody bag.
Alongside the action in the rings, visitors can browse dozens of trade stands selling everything from dog food and grooming products to coats, accessories and herbal remedies.
General admission is £5 for adults, children under 16 go free, and parking is free.
Organisers are also appealing for volunteers to help exhibitors find their rings and direct visitors around the showground.
Further information and tickets are available via the Border Union Agricultural Society website.
