Police are appealing for information following an attempted robbery in Kelso.

Around 5.15pm yesterday (Saturday), a man and a woman were depositing items at a night safe outside a bank in the town's Bridge Street when another man attempted to grab one of their bags.

When passersby jumpd in to help, the would-be thief made off empty-handed in the direction of the old kirk churchyard.

The incident unfolded at the end of a busy day for the town, with thousands of people attending the nearby Border Union Show, which finished around the same time.

The suspect is described as white, around 20 to 25-years-of-age, and around five foot, nine inches tall. He was wearing dark trousers and a beige top.

The woman was not injured but the man suffered a minor injury in the surprise encounter that did not need medical treatment.

Detective Constable Nicky Batten, of Police Scotland, said: “Thankfully no one was seriously injured but the man and woman were left very upset by what happened.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to trace the man responsible and we are asking anyone who saw where he went or knows where he might be to get in touch.

“Please check any private CCTV you may have to see if anything has been captured that could help with our investigation.

“In addition, if you were driving in the area and have any dash-cam that might assist then get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2850 of Saturday, July 26th, 2025.
