It has attracted some of world’s best Paralympians to the Scottish Borders over the years – including local lass Sammi Kinghorn.

But the Jed Renilson Wheelchair Race due to be held at Bonjedward on Sunday has been cancelled - UPDATED: HERE.

Organisers made the decision after the Met Office issued a number of weather warnings for the weekend, with heavy rain expected on Friday before Storm Boelo brings further wet and windy conditions on Saturday and Sunday.

“This isn’t without a lot of deliberation,” a spokesperson for Borders Disability Sport said.

“But the latest information we have available to us tells us that not only is there currently a Yellow Weather warning for wind on Sunday, but that the Met Office have indicated there is potential for escalation to an Amber warning. It’s looking like winds in excess of 50mph.

“We know how disappointing this news will be for everyone who was looking forward to the event, and we’re incredibly sorry to have to make this decision.”

The 10k, half marathon and ultra races are going ahead as planned.

Organisers of Saturday's Three Peaks Ultra have announced an optional route only taking in two of the Eildons to help runners avoid the most exposed parts of the hills.

And they say the 38-mile race will be cancelled if the weekend warnings are upgraded to amber or red.

It follows talks with Border Search and Rescue who provide safety cover for the event.

But , for the time being, the race is still ON and will be followed by the 10k and half marathon on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Peebles March Riders Association has announced Sunday's rideout has been cancelled due to the weather forecast.

It is being rearranged for the following Sunday - November the 1st - instead.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for much of the Scottish Borders between 6am and midnight on Friday, with heavy downpours expected to bring a risk of flooding and travel disruption.

Storm Austen is expected to drop up to 80mm of rain in some places during that time, although parts of the east coast and communities south of Duns, Kelso, Bonchester Bridge and Jedburgh are excluded.

From 6pm on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday, further wind warnings follow as Storm Boelo sweeps in, with the Met Office warning of the potential of injuries and danger to life from flying debris - with gusts of up to 65mph likely widely.

The 10k, half marathon and ultra race - over the Eildon Hills - are scheduled to go ahead as planned.

Network Rail is encouraging anyone travelling to plan ahead. It warns of the potential for disruption, with speed restrictions in place on parts of the West Coast Main Line and East Coast Main Line, as well as routes across southern and eastern Scotland.

Seahouses Coastguard Rescue Team is also urging anyone venturing out along the coast to take extra care, while anyone planning a trip to Bamburgh Castle is being advised to check before they set off.

The town's lifeboat station has announced Sunday's brew with the crew has been cancelled - saying the safety of its visitors and volunteers must come first.

The opening of Berwick’s new chess tables, at the town’s historic quayside, is also being moved “to a sunnier day!” They had been due to be unveiled tomorrow.

Kelso race course has announced tomorrow's meeting IS going ahead, with a slightly earlier start time.

A council spokesperson said: "An area of heavy rain will develop across southern and central areas of Scotland early on Friday in association with Storm Austen, extending over north east Scotland during the morning and early afternoon. The rain will turn lighter and clear from the west through the evening and overnight.

"Storm Boelo will then bring strong westerly winds to northern parts of the UK during Saturday evening. Very windy conditions will persist overnight and through much of Sunday before gradually easing from the south west later."
