It's the oldest rivalry in international football.

But a supermarket in Berwick is attempting to unite Scotland and England fans ahead of this summer's World Cup - by unveiling a special shirt sporting both teams' colours.

Some fans have branded the half-and-half top "horrific".

Others in the town - which has changed hands between the countries more than a dozen times over the centuries - revealed their loyalties are divided.

Peter Wilson, store manager at The Food Warehouse, said: “On a matchday in Berwick, you’re just as likely to hear Flower of Scotland in one aisle as Three Lions in the next, so we thought it was only right to support both this summer.

“We serve customers from England and Scotland every single day, and because we’re only a few minutes from the border, you get a real mix of loyalties coming through the doors."

Located in Northumberland, and a five-minute drive from the border, workers at the store – consisting of both English and Scottish nationals – wore the unique shirt at its official unveiling today (Thursday).

Peter added: "The town has spent centuries switching between the two countries, so this felt like the perfect way to celebrate that unique history and have a bit of fun with it this summer.”
