Two children were among a group of four people who became stranded on the Holy Island causeway after being cut off by the tide in the latest of a series of rescues at the Northumberland beauty spot.

Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat was scrambled to the scene after the alarm was raised shortly after midday yesterday (Tuesday) - more than two hours after the last safe crossing time.

However, the volunteers were stood down half a mile away after receiving a message that all casualties had reached the safety of the refuge box where they would later be recovered by the Coastguard when the water receded.

It comes just weeks after a new app was launched to alert motorists to the danger.

Leon Maughan (pictured) initially created the Holy Island Crossing Times App to help guests of the Lindisfarne Inn, Manor House and the Ship Inn, three hotels on the island owned by his dad Terry.

Leon, who grew up in Longframlington but now lives in Utrecht in the Netherlands, said: "I've spent a lot of time here and wanted to do something for the guests of the hotels and anyone who wants to visit the island.

"My experience of driving up the A1 to the island, there are a lot of warnings telling you off. This isn't for people who know the island really well, but it's an extra bit of help with the times and tourists and visitors planning their day."

In March, a photographer captured the dramatic moment emergency teams were called out to rescue a driver from the roof of their vehicle after it became stranded by the rising tide on the Holy Island causeway.

Seahouses lifeboat was supported by local coastguard teams and a police helicopter.

Beal Farm Campsite, which shared the photographs on its Facebook page, posted: "The Coastguard do an incredible job rescuing people… but many of these emergencies are completely avoidable."
