Three children were among five people rescued after the vehicle they were in became stranded by the rising tide on the Holy Island causeway.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene around 5pm last night (Wednesday) - more than an hour after the last safe crossing time.

“As further information came through, we were advised that all five people remained inside the vehicle — however, the vehicle had drifted off the carriageway,” a spokesperson for the RNLI recalled.

“This quickly developed into a significant multi-agency response, including Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 189, Seahouses Coastguard Rescue Team, Berwick Coastguard rescue team - Holy Island Coastguard; and Northumbria Police."

Seahouses lifeboat is reminding drivers never to attempt the crossing when water is covering the road - warning the tide can rise rapidly and conditions can change quickly.

It's the latest in a series of rescues at the Northumberland beauty spot.

"Thankfully, all five people were safely rescued and returned to shore," the spokesperson continued.

"But this incident is another stark reminder of just how quickly the tide can turn on the Holy Island Causeway."

And, they added: "The safe crossing times are there for a reason. The causeway is tidal. This was a vehicle carrying three children. What could have been a family journey home could have had a very different outcome."
