Steam train services at a Northumberland tourist attraction have been halted - after sparks from their engine were blamed for starting line-side fires.

It comes just weeks after it was forced to close due to flooding!

Heatherslaw Light Railway is continuing to operate services along the banks of the River Till - between Heatherslaw Station and Etal Castle - with the help of its diesel engine, named Binky.

And, having just enjoyed a busy Bank Holiday weekend, it's not stopping visitors in their tracks.

Christine Smith, from Heatherslaw Light Railway, told Greatest Hits Radio: "It's not common for us to have a high fire threat at the end of April/beginning of May!

"The sparks from the steam loco were igniting small trackside fires last week due to the very dry conditions and the decision was made immediately to replace the steam loco with the diesel engine.

"Other steam railways around the country have had the same problems." But she added: "Normally it's flooding which is the issue here!"

The track at Heatherslaw Light Railway is pictured under water last month.

While services are continuing to operate, four steam engine driving courses are having to be rearranged.

The Northumberland attraction is thanking visitors for their understanding.

In a post last week, it said: "Due to the very dry conditions and severe fire risk, we will not be running our steam engine over the next few days. 'Binky', our diesel engine, will be in service instead."

It followed that up on Monday this week by saying: "Although the weather is a little cooler, we're continuing to run a diesel service at the moment and will continue to monitor the situation."

Heatherslaw Light Railway says any further updates will be posted on its website and Facebook page.

Undeterred, Christine added: "We've had decent Bank Holiday numbers and it's always good to see families enjoying themselves!"

In a further update on May 7th, a spokesperson added: "Due to the ongoing extremely dry weather, we are unfortunately having to suspend our steam services until further notice. This is a necessary step to reduce fire risk along the line and ensure everyone's safety.

"During this period, we will be running a normal service using our diesel locomotive Binky.

"We understand this will be disappointing news for many of our steam fans, and we share that disappointment. Please rest assured we are monitoring conditions closely, and we'll look to restore our steam services as soon as it's safe to do so."
