NHS Borders has announced the new walk-in clinic in Hawick is operating at reduced capacity.

It will close at 4pm this afternoon (Tuesday), instead of 8pm, for this reason.

It comes just a week after the health board announced it was doubling its opening hours.

When it was first launched in April, the pilot - based at the town's Community Hospital - could be accessed by patients registered with Mairches and Teviot practices in Hawick, and Selkirk Medical Practice between 2pm and 6pm, Tuesday to Fridays.

Aimed at anyone with a new medical issue which isn't an emergency, the walk-in clinic was designed to end the 8am scramble for an appointment, and make it easier for people who are working to see a health professional out-of-hours.

But it was forced to close for two days earlier this month due to "temporary staffing pressures".

That sparked a political row, with questions being raised over whether the new service had been properly resourced, having previously been expected to open later, seven days a week.

Then it was announced the opening hours were being extended from July 7th, from midday to 8pm, and can also now be accessed by patients registered with GP practices in Jedburgh and Newcastleton.

The health board is apologising for any inconvenience caused.

Meanwhile, it's emerged, 27 hours of healthcare professionals' time was lost at Hawick's Teviot Medical Practice last month because patients failed to attend their appointments.

101 were missed in June - half of them with a GP.

Locals are being urged to let staff know if they're unable to attend in future.
