A 38-year-old man who struck another man on the head and body with a hammer after he came to his door in Hawick to collect a car seat belonging to his ex has been fined £600, and ordered to pay a £40 victim surcharge.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court today (Tuesday) heard Jamie Wilson left his victim with a 2cm cut to the back of his head, which was bleeding, following the assault outside his home in Fraser Avenue on September 6th.

His solicitor said the complainer arrived "loud and aggressive" and that's why his client attended the door with a hammer, with the pair ending up rolling around on the ground at the front of the property.

Wilson pled guilty to a charge of assault to injury.

Sheriff Peter Paterson said the forestry worker is lucky there wasn’t a more serious outcome.
