7 Hearts 7 Schools: Galashiels fundraising campaign aims to save lives
Last updated 13th Oct 2026
A campaign’s been launched to install lifesaving defibrillators at seven schools in Galashiels before Christmas.
Local fundraisers Karen Walker and Gary Kowbel initially set out to raise funds for just one, outside the Spar in Langlee.
But, with the community’s support, they were determined not to stop there.
The pair’s “7 Hearts 7 Schools” campaign has already received backing from local residents and businesses, with a defibrillator installed at Tweedbank Primary School and plans progressing for another at St Peter’s in Galashiels.
Each costs £750 to be placed inside a cabinet in the school.
“The one at Langlee has been called on five times,” Karen said. “It’s not been used, but it has been called on five times.
“There's another two to go into Balmoral and St Margaret's (primary schools), and we've just to buy another one for the Burgh.
“We've had lots of support, but now we're looking for donations to help with the upkeep of this life-saving equipment.”
Borders MP John Lamont recently met with the campaigners to hear about their fundraising efforts and plans to improve access to defibrillators across the area.
TD1 Youth Ambassadors hosted a bake sale in the square opposite Galashiels Interchange earlier today (Tuesday).
Mr Lamont said: “It was great to meet Karen and Gary and hear about the incredible work they are doing to make our local communities safer.
“What started as a campaign to install one defibrillator has grown into a laudable community effort that could help save lives across Galashiels.
“A nearby defibrillator can make all the difference in an emergency. I'm proud to support their efforts and would encourage everyone to get involved where they can and donate if possible.
“Karen and Gary deserve huge amounts of credit for the time, energy and effort they have put into this campaign. If you can, please help them to achieve their goal of installing defibrillators at all seven schools before Christmas.”
