Show of faith: Hymns ring out as Catholics parade through Galashiels
Last updated 7th Jun 2026
Members of the Catholic Church have demonstrated their faith with a parade through the centre of Galashiels.
Hymns and prayer filled the air as worshippers, from as far afield as Stirling and Hawick, took part in the Corpus Christi procession, which means "Body of Christ" in Latin.
An open-air ceremony was held in Bank Street Gardens before the worshippers returned to Our Lady and St Andrew's Church.
The event was led by Archbishop Leo Cushley - who described the scenes as "wonderful."
"It was so moving, so beautiful," he told Greatest Hits Radio.
The Archbishop, who recently returned from a visit to the Vatican where he met the Pope, praised the "warm welcome from the people of Galashiels."
"I think it's been maybe 500 years (since the event was last held here)," he added. "We're not sure, but it could be something like that.
"For us, the Blessed Sacrament is the living presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
"Catholic Christians have been doing this for a thousand years, praying for the peace and prosperity of our country."

Traffic was briefly brought to a standstill as the procession made its way through the town, with many locals stopping to take pictures of the occasion.
Father Benedict Iwatt, Parish Administrator of Our Lady and St Andrew in Galashiels, said it was a privilege to host the event.
"It's exciting to host the whole of the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh here in Galashiels," he said.
"We still need Christ to point us in the right direction and remind us of the values we uphold. We need to love one another, and that's very important."
