Tables and chairs from the recently-closed Galashiels Academy are being put up for auction - to help fund activities in the new school next door.

Wooden benches and a pommel horse from the PE department, rulers from maths and maps from geography are among dozens of items of memorabilia being advertised in advance of this weekend’s sale.

Some of the lots date back to when the school first opened in the 1960s, while an original mechanical recording barometer, known as a barograph - once used in school science and geography lessons - is forecast to create a storm of interest.

Other items going under the hammer include white boards, black boards, lab coats and padded seats – normally reserved for senior teachers - as well as a table football game from the S6 Common Room!

The auction is being held in the new school – in the town’s Scott Park - at 11.30am on Saturday (June 13th).

Visitors are also invited on a tour of the £65 million campus, which includes the town’s new swimming pool and welcomed its first pupils at the start of the year.

Two events are planned – at 10am to 1pm, and 1pm to 2.15pm (school tour only). Both are free to attend but tickets must be booked in advance.

Former staff and pupils packed the main hall ahead of farewell tours of the building in December.

It comes just months after more than 1,000 tickets were snapped up for three farewell tours of the old Elm Row building, which was officially opened by the Queen Mother in September 1964.

Academy Head Teacher Steven Raeburn said: "The auction promises to be a highlight of the event and will help raise valuable funds for our school community.

“We look forward to welcoming former pupils, families and the wider community for what will be a memorable occasion."
