The Duke of Buccleuch has praised the "remarkable spirit and dedication" of communities across the Scottish Borders at a special ceremony to mark his nine years as Lord-Lieutenant for Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale.

Scotland rugby star John Jeffrey, who takes over the reins, joined him at the tree-planting at the entrance to his home at Bowhill, near Selkirk.

The Acer Drummondi is accompanied by a plaque from his colleagues and friends, which includes his years in office - 2016–2025.

Richard Scott, the 10th Duke of Buccleuch, said: "It has been an immense honour to serve the Borders community as Lord-Lieutenant and a privilege to witness the remarkable spirit and dedication of our communities, especially through the challenges of the Covid years.

“As I step aside, I am deeply grateful for the support I have received.

“I am truly pleased to see John Jeffrey take on the role of Lord-Lieutenant. I am confident that he will serve with distinction as His Majesty’s representative and continue to uphold the values and traditions that make our region so exceptional.”

The commemorative planting stands as a symbol of appreciation for the Duke’s contribution to the lieutenancy and the wider community, and as a lasting legacy at Bowhill.

The ceremony was attended by past and present Vice Lord-Lieutenants and Deputy Lieutenants, including Phillipa Lee Vice Lord Lieutenant.

Paying tribute to his predecessor, Mr Jeffrey said: “Over this time, he represented the area with great diligence, commitment and pride.

"Typical of his love and humility for the area, he has planted it at the entrance to Bowhill for everyone to see.”
