Thieves have been caught on camera in a smash and grab raid on a Co-op store in the Scottish Borders.

Police are investigating the theft of a cash machine from the branch in Coldstream, around 1.30am this morning (Monday).

It's believed a stolen telehandler was used to rip the ATM from the High Street store before loading it onto a pick-up, which was taken from a driveway in Duns - ten miles away.

Dramatic footage has emerged of the culprits jumping into the Nissan Navara with what appears to be the cash machine ON THE ROOF - although police say both vehicles were later recovered, along with the ATM.

It's unclear what else was taken.

But the store remained closed this afternoon while the entrance was secured.

The main road through Coldstream - a busy cross-border route - was closed for a time while police secured the scene.

Recalling the incident, one resident said: "I live three doors up and jumped up when I heard the smash. By the time I threw some clothes on and ran out, heard wheels screeching away. Was just the abandoned tractor, no truck or cash machine was there."

Another added: "We are right next door and got such a fright. Couldn't believe what was happening. Saw them loading the cash machine on top of the truck."

It's not the first time the Co-op has been targeted.

In recent months, stores in Kelso, Wooler, Chirnside and Newtown St Boswells have all been hit - although two men were arrested in connection with the latter.

Detective Constable Callum Wood said: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and to trace those involved

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area between 1.30am and 2am on Monday, who witnessed anything suspicious, or who has any information that may assist our investigation to please contact us.

"I would urge anyone with dash-cam or CCTV footage to please review it and contact us if it contains anything relevant."

The Co-op has described the raid as "unsuccessful", and say staff hope to reopen the store later tonight or tomorrow.

"We appeal for anyone with information to come forward to Police, who are investigating," a spokesperson said.

"The High Street store remains temporality closed while essential repairs are carried out, with teams working to re-open the store to serve the community as soon as possible.”
