Man accused of causing girl's death in road crash appears in court
A man has appeared in court in connection with the death of an 11-year-old girl in the Scottish Borders.
Elizabeth Bell, from East Gordon, had been making her way to school in Earlston on the morning of January 31st, 2024 when she was involved in a collision with a bin lorry at a junction on the A6105 road between Greenlaw and Gordon.
She was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Edinburgh with critical injuries, but died a week later.
Police have confirmed David Maxwell, from Galashiels, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
The 35-year-old made no plea when he appeared in private at Selkirk Sheriff Court yesterday (Monday).
He's been committed for further examination and released on bail.
At the time of the incident, Scottish Borders Council said it was cooperating fully with ongoing investigations into the circumstances which led to the death of the schoolgirl, who was described as "a bright, friendly, kind and caring soul".
