Berwick has been placed on alert amid concerns the high tide combined with the forecasted weather could lead to flooding.

Properties at The Chandlery and Marlin Buildings, Blakewell Road and West End in Tweedmouth; The Waterfront at Sandstell Road in Spittal; and Berwick Dock are all expected to be affected.

And local residents are being urged to act now.

A spokesperson for the Port of Berwick said: “Flooding is expected from 3am to 5am on Wednesday.

“Locations most affected will be properties exposed to waves from the south.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.”

The Environment Agency has issued two alerts, which say flooding is possible.

As well as one for the Tweed estuary, another has been issued for the Northumberland coast.

As well as low lying land and roads near Pier Road in Berwick, coastal roads and footpaths near Alnmouth are also at risk of being submerged, along with the A1068 Main Road.

The flood gates at Warkworth have been closed as a precaution.

The Environment Agency states: “Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

Meanwhile, in the Scottish Borders, Bowhill House has announced its grounds are closed until further notice due to damage caused by the recent storms.

It says staff are working as quickly and safely as possible to make the paths safe again by clearing fallen trees and low-hanging branches.
