Berwick’s flag was proudly raised today (Tuesday) in a celebration of the town's history, heritage and civic identity.

The ceremony at Newfields was led by Sheriff Michael Greener, with children from Holy Trinity School joining the occasion.

The project was initiated by Councillor Nicole Brooke, who represents Berwick North on Northumberland County Council, and delivered with the support of the local authority.

"Today was a really proud moment for Berwick,” Councillor Brooke said. “Our town has an extraordinary history and a unique identity, and it's wonderful to see our flag flying for everyone to enjoy.

"It was particularly special to have the children from Holy Trinity School joining us. They are Berwick's future, and I want them to grow up feeling proud of their town and its heritage.”

The flag features Berwick's historic bear and tree emblem, a symbol of the town's distinctive identity.

Councillor Brooke added: "Our history is one of our greatest assets, particularly for tourism. Sometimes the smallest projects can make a big difference to civic pride.”

Elsewhere, Northumberland County Council has announced the First School in Lowick will be closed on Wednesday.

It’s to allow staff to clear up damage caused by heavy rain, during ongoing repairs to the roof.
