A 37-year-old man who struck another man over the head with a glass bottle, and then smashed a door at Borders General Hospital (BGH) after injuring himself in the attack, has been jailed for a total of 33 months.

Selkirk Sheriff Court today (Monday) heard Andrew Atkinson's victim was left with a five millimetre cut to his left cheek following the "altercation" at a property at The Pirns in Galashiels on September the 27th last year.

His victim managed to push him onto a sofa and then flee the flat before raising the alarm.

Atkinson, previously of Forest Road, Galashiels, pled guilty to a reduced charge of assault to severe injury when he appeared from custody this afternoon.

He also admitted flicking blood at a police officer after being taken to the BGH for stitches to a thumb wound, which was said to be bleeding heavily.

Fiona Hamilton, prosecuting, said Atkinson also kicked out at the officer and repeatedly attempted to headbutt him.

And then, as he was being led away to a police van, he kicked a door at the A&E department - causing a glass panel to shatter.

The man was taken to Borders General Hospital for treatment.

The court heard Atkinson told police: "It's because he spoke to (named woman) like a piece of s***, so I sorted it!"

Atkinson's solicitor, Mat Patrick, explained his client felt the victim had behaved inappropriately towards his partner, who was also present.

All parties, as he understood it, were "intoxicated to some degree".

Mr Partick said Atkinson had also struggled to deal with the loss of a close relative, who had died.

Sheriff Peter Paterson backdated the sentence to September 27th, when Atkinson was first taken into custody.

Knife attack

A 36-year-old man has admitted attacking another man with a knife in Galashiels - to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Daniel Ross also repeatedly struck and kicked Paul Madden on the body during the assault in the town’s Gala Park Court on August the 9th last year.

He's also pled guilty to producing a controlled drug after four cannabis plants were found in his home, at the same address.

Sentence has been deferred at Selkirk Sheriff Court until April the 15th for background reports.

Petition

A 42-year-old man's been charged with assault to injury.

It follows an incident alleged to have taken place at a pub in Galashiels last month.

Jack Rolinski made no plea when he appeared in private at Selkirk Sheriff Court this afternoon (Monday).

He was committed for further examination and released on bail.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "At 10pm on Thursday, February 13th, officers attended a premises in High Street, Galashiels after a report of an assault.

"A 42-year-old man was arrested and charged and appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday, March 3rd."
