Two people die following three vehicle crash on A1 in Northumberland

Two people have died following a three-vehicle crash on the A1 in Northumberland.
The man and woman, both aged in their 60s, were reportedly travelling south in a Skoda, along with an Audi, when the vehicles were involved in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
Police say a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, near Buckton, after the alarm was raised around 7.40am yesterday (Wednesday).
The man driving the Skoda passed away at the scene, while his passenger was taken to hospital where she died from her injuries. Their next of kin have been informed.
The driver of the HGV, a man in his 30s, was also injured in the collision. He was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road was closed between Alnwick and Lowick for several hours while investigators examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared.
Police are now appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police, said: “Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the man and woman who have sadly died in this tragic incident.
“We are now appealing for any information and in particular, anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicles involved, to come forward.
“We are particularly keen to speak with anyone who was travelling on the A1 around 7.40am yesterday in either direction and who may have seen what happened.
“If this was you, or you were in the area around the time of this collision, please come forward and speak with us. Any information you are able to provide could prove crucial to our enquiries.”
