A man has died following a "collision with a bus" on the A1 in Northumberland.

Emergency services raced to the scene, just south of Haggerston Castle, after the alarm was raised shortly after 5am this morning (Sunday).

It was reported that the vehicle had been travelling on the northbound carriageway when it has struck a pedestrian who is believed to have been on the road.

The casualty - who is in his 30s - was declared dead at the scene.

Police say his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

The road was closed for a number of hours but has since fully re-opened to traffic.

The driver of the bus remained at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.

Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have dashcam or CCTV footage of the incident, or the moments in the lead up.
