Man dies and woman fighting for life in hospital following crash on A1

A man has died and a woman is in a critical condition in hospital after their car was involved in a collision with a lorry on the A1 in Northumberland.
Police say it was reported that the white Hyundai i30 had been joining the busy cross border route from the junction with the B1342 - Bamburgh turn-off - when the tragedy unfolded, just after 4pm on Friday.
Emergency services attended and the driver of the car, a man in his 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.
A woman in her 70s, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was seriously injured and taken to hospital by air ambulance, where she remains in a critical condition.
The car transporter lorry had been travelling south on the A1, near Belford, at the t,ime.
And the road was closed for several hours afterwards to allow for recovery of the vehicles.

Northumbria Police has now launched a full investigation into the collision and officers are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
Sergeant Alex Partington, from the force's Roads Policing Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are firmly with the family and friends of the man who sadly lost his life in yesterday’s collision.
“We are now carrying out a range of enquiries to ascertain exactly what took place.
“As part of our investigation, we’d like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, in particular those with dash cam footage of the moments leading up to the collision.

It's the latest in a series of serious and fatal crashes on the road and comes amid increasing calls for the route to be fully dualled.
