An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply after a car crash and a foot chase in Walsall.

The force's Project Guardian Western team made the arrest on Wednesday on Pleck Road, after a vehicle failed to stop for officers.

Plain clothes officers had witnessed a suspected drug deal close to the town centre, according to police.

Marked police cars tried to stop the vehicle, which drove off before crashing into another car on Pleck Road.

The driver then tried to run off, disposing of a mobile phone and a package as he ran, police said.

Officers recovered Class A drugs and a large amount of cash.

The driver was eventually detained and taken to hospital for assessment, before being taken into custody on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply, driving dangerously and failing to stop for officers.

He remains in custody while enquiries continue, according to police.

Project Guardian was introduced in 2019 to combat knife crime and serious youth violence.

Anyone with information about crime in their neighbourhood is asked to report it via 101 or Live Chat, or anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
