Telford Town Park Amphitheatre reopens after ambitious restoration work
The venue closed in the 90s and fell into disrepair
A once-popular amphitheatre is being restored to its former glory in Telford Town Park, creating a new outdoor events space for vibrant shows, performances and family events.
Today (July 18), following extensive restoration work, the Telford Town Park Amphitheatre will reopen to the public.
In its heyday, during the 1980s, the amphitheatre located by Randlay Pool in the park, was a vibrant cultural hub which hosted regular live gigs and performances, before later closing in the 1990s.
Earlier this year, Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council Leader, said: “In 2024 local residents approached me with the idea of restoring the Amphitheatre in the Town Park.
“The suggestion made complete sense given how popular it used to be and the fact we’re committed to providing as many free or low-cost events for residents so that they don’t have to travel outside of our area and can spend their money here with local businesses in Telford rather than elsewhere.
“It’s also an opportunity to provide a unique facility and encourage people to visit Telford and Wrekin too."
Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism, Culture & the Arts, said it was the Telford residents who inspired the decision for the revamp.
"It was something that came up on the Telford Memories Facebook Page which just showed a photo of the amphitheatre," she said.
"And from that we just said why don't we get the amphitheatre back into use and get it reopened for this summer."
The reopening weekend will bring the Amphitheatre back to life with two days of live music and performances, hosted by compere Neil Jackson, and showcasing a mix of local talent and popular acts.
Being the first act to perform on the new stage, Shades of Grey band artist Gyn Jines said: “We are proud to be the first band to play on the fabulous, renewed Telford Town Park Amphitheatre.
"Expect mainly upbeat covers and don’t be shy to dance!”
Local band Jester’s lead singer, Tony Mallony reflected on their long-standing relationship with the space, saying: “The Amphitheatre has always been a special place for us growing up and we are honoured to be a part of the grand reopening.”
Midnight Jukes shared their pride at representing the area adding: “Being from Shropshire, we’re honoured to be asked and we’re very excited.”
The opening weekend marks the official launch of Telford Theatre on Tour 2026, a programme designed to bring high-quality, affordable cultural experiences into the heart of the community.
