A shoplifter has been jailed for two years and two months after pleading guilty to 37 counts of shop theft.

Connor Heneghan, 28, of Elgin Street in Stoke-on-Trent, was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Thursday 15th October.

The offences took place between March and July this year.

Criminal Behaviour Order

The court heard Heneghan was also given a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

The order will come into effect once he is released from prison.

It means he cannot enter the following stores:

  • Any Co-Op store in Telford
  • Tesco Express on Park Lane, Woodside
  • Telford Express on Brunel Road, Mallinslee
  • Sainsbury's on Forge Retail Park, Telford
  • Aldi in Madeley
  • Greggs on Anstice Road, Madeley

Under the order, Heneghan must also not refuse to leave a premises if asked to do so by someone in authority.

Police response

Inspector Rich Jones said: "I welcome the sentence handed down to Heneghan, whose persistent offending has had a significant impact on retail staff, businesses and the wider community."

He said: "Shop theft is not a victimless crime. Repeat offending places considerable strain on retailers and can leave employees feeling distressed and intimidated."

He said: "Through the work of our officers and our partners, we were able to build a strong case which has resulted in both a custodial sentence and a Criminal Behaviour Order being imposed."

He said: "The five-year order will provide additional protection for local businesses and gives officers further powers to take action should Heneghan continue to target retailers when he is released from prison."

He added: "We remain committed to tackling repeat offenders and supporting businesses across Telford by taking robust action against those who repeatedly commit crime in our communities."
